Harvey Cox and "The Future of Faith"

Saturday, March 6, 2010 9:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. | Listen: Part One here | Part Two here

Harvey Cox,  Hollis Professor of Divinity Emeritus at Harvard, will speak at St. Stephen's on the topic "The Future of Faith," based on his book of the same name. In this work, Professor Cox asserts that we have entered the "Age of the Spirit," where dogma is less important than spirituality for many Christians. He will expand upon this idea in his lecture and will also be available at its end for a book signing.

More about The Future of Faith

Harvey Cox broke new ground in 1965 when he published his international bestseller THE SECULAR CITY, which sold over 1 million copies. THE FUTURE OF FAITH is the latest major-thesis book from the revered theologian, in which he offers a new interpretation of the history and the future of religion. Providing a landmark analysis of why Christian beliefs and dogma are giving way to new grassroots movements rooted in social justice and spiritual experience, Cox identifies and explores three fundamental shifts over the last 2,000 years of church history:

• The Age of Faith: the first three centuries of Christianity, when the early church was more concerned with following Jesus’s teachings than enforcing beliefs.
• The Age of Belief: marking a significant shift between the fourth and twentieth centuries when the church focused on orthodoxy and “correct doctrine.”
• The Age of the Spirit: a trend that began fifty years ago and is increasingly directing the church of tomorrow, whereby Christians are ignoring dogma and breaking down barriers. Spirituality is replacing formal religion.

Make your reservation today to hear this renowned theologian at St. Stephen’s.
