New opportunity: Virginia Girls' Choir
St. Stephen’s will inaugurate a program in September, the Virginia Girls’ Choir, for girls in grades 4 through 7. This exceptional choir of girls will learn to sing the music of the Anglican tradition with great spirit and depth of understanding The choir will bear witness to St. Stephen’s presence to the wider Richmond community and throughout Virginia, raising the hearts and minds of both the singers and the listeners. The St. Stephen’s Choristers are boys and girls in the fourth through seventh grade who sing weekly for the 9:00 Holy Eucharist in the main church, September through April. The choir’s curriculum is based on a program developed by the Royal School of Church Music which directs each chorister’s progress in developing skills in music reading, tone production, knowledge of liturgy and worship, and teamwork. The St. Stephen’s Ringers are boys and girls in the fourth grade and above who have had no previous experience ringing handbells. They rehearse on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00-5:00 and ring periodically in the 9:00 Holy Eucharist in church and occasionally in Palmer Hall. The Youth Handbell Choir is for youth in grade 4 and above who have had ringing experience. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 after the parish supper and rings at the 9:00 Holy Eucharist in church and other occasional services. The Palmer Hall Chapel Choir sings for weekly services in Palmer Hall Chapel. The chapel was the original church and is named for the Rev. Giles Buckner Palmer, Rector of St. Stephen’s from 1921-46. Children in the second and third grades are welcome to sing in the choir which rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 5:15-6:00 and sings for services on Sunday mornings at 9:00.
