MiddleEastPilgrimsThe Center for Interfaith Reconciliation promotes understanding between Christians and Muslims and is an integral part of St. Stephen’s Church. We pursue reconciliation through education and immersion experiences that provide first-hand glimpses of Muslim life and which extend to dialogue and collaboration on projects of mutual interest. It is our hope and our intention that these efforts will bear fruit not only in our relationships with Muslims, but also in other outreach work in this community, the nation and the world. Education: To date our educational efforts have included an ongoing reading and discussion group called “Understanding Islam,” as well as bringing prominent guests to St. Stephen’s to teach, speak and preach. These have included:

Paul-Gordon Chandler, an Episcopal priest who lives and works in Cairo, Egypt, and author of Pilgrims of Christ on the Muslim Road

David Ford and Catriona Lang of the Interfaith Programme at Cambridge University in England

The Rt. Rev. Mano Rumalshah, the Anglican Bishop of Peshawar, who lives with his wife and daughter in Pakistan, one of the most difficult places in the world to practice the Christian faith.

Immersion has included a visit to a Richmond mosque and explorations of ongoing discussion and collaboration with local Muslim leaders. It has also included trips to the Middle East by a groups of Episcopal clergy and by groups of St. Stephen’s parishioners.

Our future plans include extending the number of speakers and themes addressed in classes, and to offer a variety of immersion experiences. As we deepen our ties to the Richmond Muslim community, so we will seek collaboration with a few, leading Episcopal parishes and Anglican centers internationally. We will also extend the number and type of overseas trips we offer, in the process building close ties to key people and places in the Muslim world. Such links will bridge the gulf between faiths in practical ways.

The founding director of the CRM is the Rev. Dr. William L. Sachs, a priest of the Episcopal Church with extensive experience in the parish and throughout the Anglican Communion. Dr. Sachs is the former Vice President at the Episcopal Church Foundation where he began a research and development program focused on grassroots trends among Episcopalians and across the Anglican Communion. Dr. Sachs is also the author of three books, including The Transformation of Anglicanism, published by Cambridge University Press. His new book, Homosexuality and the Crisis of Anglicanism, is nearing completion.
